A boat going at 50MPH on the water with a 3/4" high speed intake strainer will measure approximately 23 PSI of water pressure. This pressure will be directly exerted against the thin seals that small centrifugal bait pumps use for the shaft seal. Excessive pressure will cause premature failure by forcing water into the motor chamber and shorting out the motor. To help prevent this and reduce the intake pressure vent holes should be drilled in the thru hull to vent some of the pressure out while under way. Drilling even (3) 1/4" holes will have NO effect on the pumping capability of your pump and has the added bonus of not over flowing your bait tank while the boat is under way. Below are a series of photos on how to drill these holes. These photos were taken of Live Bait Larry's 26' Proline.
